Dawn Meats won the overall award within the ‘Sustainability’ category in the recent Bord Bia Food & Drink Awards 2013. The award is in recognition of the food group’s work in this area, which included water saving of between 56–60,000 million litres in 2012 alone. Between water and energy reductions, Dawn Meats has reduced its carbon footprint by 3,000 tonnes in one year.

Niall Browne, group chief executive of Dawn Meats, comments: “We are delighted to receive this reward in recognition of the work carried out by our Sustainability teams across the business, especially as it is the first Bord Bia Sustainability Award since Origin Green was launched in June 2012.  Dawn Meats is committed to sustainability for a number of years now and will continue to strive for further improvements.”

Martin Chilcott, managing director of 2degrees and a member of the judging panel, says: “Sustainability is increasingly important due to rising pressures to produce high quality food and drink for a global population of close to 9 billion, but doing so in a sustainable and cost effective fashion.”
