The Irish economy is expected to grow by almost 6% this year, according to a new forecast.

The EY Economic Eye forecast for winter shows that Ireland’s economy is on track to outpace all other EU states in 2015.

The growth is still mainly centred around the big cities however, with Dublin showing an 8% unemployment rate compared to 12% in the South East and Midlands.

Economic Advisor Neil Gibson says the Government needs to push growth in the rest of the country.

Mr Gibson said: “It’s a patchwork of success with some places much stronger than others. Generally the urban areas are much stronger, Dublin and north Belfast, but we have some pockets of success elsewhere.

“The real challenge now for Ireland is to see if it can get more of that economic growth out to other places outside the Dublin conurbation.

“Really, that was the difficulty in the previous boom, Dublin just got too expensive in property and wages.”
