Microsoft Office 365 goes down for users across Europe

15:22 2015

Microsoft’s Office 365 service has gone offline for many users in the UK and Europe on Thursday due to a problem with Microsoft’s cloud computing service, Azure.

The issue has now been resolved. A Microsoft spokesman said: “Some customers, particularly those in Europe and the UK, may have been unable to access services earlier today. Services are fully restored and we thank customers for their patience.”

The incident appears to be related to Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, on which 365 runs. The Azure status page said: “Starting at approximately 09:00 on 3rd Dec, 2015, customers began experiencing intermittent issues accessing Azure services that use, or have dependencies on Azure Active Directory.

Microsoft said its engineering teams have identified the error that is the root cause of the outage and all services which were impacted by this morning’s outage have been restored.

The impact is largely centralised to the West Europe and North Europe regions, the company said.

Frustrated users had taken to Twitter and other social media to vent their annoyance at not being able to access the various services impacted by the outage, particularly the Outlook email service.

The Office 365 web portal provides access to a number of popular cloud based applications, including the Outlook email service, as well as Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Office 365 is the brand name used by Microsoft for a group of software plus services subscriptions that provides productivity software and related services to its subscribers. For business and enterprise users, Office 365 offers plans including e-mail and social networking services through hosted versions of Exchange Server, Skype for Business Server, SharePoint and Office Online, integration with Yammer, as well as access to the Office software.
