netflix-logoMovie streaming giant Netflix is operating its streaming TV service in 190 countries, with the addition of 130 new markets, the company has announced.

“Today you are witnessing the birth of a new global Internet TV network,” said co-founder and chief executive Reed Hastings at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

“With this launch, consumers around the world – from Singapore to St Petersburg, from San Francisco to Sao Paulo – will be able to enjoy TV shows and movies simultaneously, no more waiting” – he added.

Netflix, which has around 70 million subscribers, is aggressively moving into new markets and aims to reach 200 countries by the end of 2016, as slowing domestic growth puts pressure on the company.

Earlier today the company announced it had launched operations in India, with plans starting at 500 rupees (€6.96) per month.

Netflix shares were up 5.5% at $113.60 in early afternoon trading on Wall St.

The move confirmed months of speculation on the launch of the service in the second-most populous country in the world.

Users can access Netflix through an app on a smart TV, a videogame console, a streaming player, a smartphone or a tablet.

Netflix is the world’s leading Internet television network with over 70 million members in over 190 countries enjoying more than 125 million hours of TV shows and movies per day, including original series, documentaries and feature films.
