Abbeyfeale Community Council plans to transform the convent into a hub for new businesses and job creation, a community events hall and a visitor and heritage centre. If the community council’s plans go ahead, it could create a significant number of new jobs in the town as well as boosting Abbeyfeale’s attraction for tourism.

The community council has been in negotiation with the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB) regarding the building for a number of months. According to chairman of Abbeyfeale Community Council, Maurice O’Connell, the council hopes the lease agreement will be signed off within the next month or two.

Plans for the building include developing a business enterprise incubation centre. The council also hopes to attract a significant anchor tenant as well as start-up companies by working closely with Enterprise Ireland, the IDA and Innovate Limerick. Start-ups and businesses involved in technology will also be welcome. A community element to the transformation will include a multi-functional events hall to cater to the needs of groups of all ages.

The plan also includes a proposal to develop an interpretive/heritage centre to showcase Abbeyfeale’s unique heritage and cultural richness.
