According to Fianna Fail TD Robert Troy, Bord ná Mona requires a strategy for an alternative energy supply.

This news comes after Bord na Mona’s planning permission for its Offaly plant was rejected, with the result of several jobs in the area now at risk.

The ruling comes as An Taisce’s challenge against An Bord Pleanala’s decision in 2013 to allow the plant to continue operating beyond the end of this year. Although a stay has been put on the order which will keep the premises open until the end of next April.

TD Robert Troy has said that if the plant closes an alternative is needed.

“Peat extraction is not going to last indefinitely, we need to see a clear comprehensive strategy by the Government, by the board and CEO, of Bord Na Mona which will use alternative energy supplies,” Mr Troy said.

“So that in the long term the future viability and sustainability of the jobs in Bord Na Mona across the mid land region is retained.”
