Enet, Ireland’s largest open-access network operator, has announced that it has grown its wholesale customer base to 80 unique retail service providers across Ireland. This milestone highlights how the company’s open-access model has provided increased choice and competition within Ireland’s telecommunications market.

Enet’s networks, including both national fibre and wireless infrastructure, enable it to deliver a variety of telecommunication solutions to service providers and ultimately to businesses and residential users. These services range from 4G mobile and cable TV to wireless broadband and Local Loop Unbundling – whereby last mile copper infrastructure can be connected to fibre to increase the bandwidth available.

In Limerick City alone there are now 30 different telecommunications companies using the local Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs), which Enet operates on behalf of the State. This competition, facilitated by the MANs, has helped stimulate economic activity in the area, as well as providing end-users with a range of high-quality internet services that were not previously available.

Over one million end users are now benefiting from Enet’s national fibre and wireless networks. The one million beneficiaries include mobile phone and device-users, students, residential users, public sector workers, as well as staff in multinational organisations.

Peter McCarthy (pictured), Enet Group CEO, said: “Our open-access model has decisively broken end-users’ reliance on single suppliers, and introduced greater competition to Ireland’s telecoms market. Our carrier customers increasingly recognise Enet’s ability to act as a reliable partner for their future network requirements, and we’re committed to helping them meet their goals by providing fibre and wireless networks that are open to all operators on the same basis. After all, we only succeed when our customers succeed.”

David Eyre, Enet’s Chief Commercial Officer, echoed this by saying: “For Enet, open-access has been a way of life for nearly 15 years. We embrace the wholesale, open-access nature of our business and ensure that we don’t compete with our customers. This has been the key to our success. We are justifiably proud to say that every major carrier in Ireland – now 80 of them – uses Enet-operated networks to systemically improve their own retail services.”
